Took my lunch at the overlook off Route 40 near Uniontown and counted 6 hawks riding one thermal
Sat there with my sandwich for 20 minutes and they never flapped once, just circled up and up like the sky was an escalator. Anyone else got a spot on their route where you stop just to watch something?
That "sky was an escalator" line is perfect, I know exactly what you mean. There's a ridge off the highway by me where the turkey vultures do the same thing late in the day, just ride that warm air in big lazy circles without a single wing beat. I pull over there sometimes on the way home and eat an apple and watch them for a bit. Funny how something that slow can be so hard to look away from.
