Frost proof faucet plinth idea, didn't work like the video said

Saw a dude on YouTube lay a brick plinth around a frost proof faucet to hide the ugly pipe. Tried it on a job over in Akron last Thursday, and the mortar cracked by Saturday. The freeze thaw cycle here is no joke, guess the video guy was in Texas. Anybody else try this and use some kind of expansion gap or flex additive to make it last?
