Overheard a young guy at the supply yard call brick 'just glorified blocks'

Made me laugh at first. Then I thought about it. He's never laid a Flemish bond or a herringbone pattern. Never had to match old hand-mades for a restoration. Told him to come watch me on a curved wall job next week in Cleveland. He didn't say much after that. You ever have someone dismiss the craft like that?

... wait, he called bricks "glorified blocks"? That's like calling a violin a glorified cigar box with strings. Has this kid never seen a brick arch stand without mortar for a hundred years?

Honestly the "glorified blocks" line got me too. Bricks are way more than that, they've been holding buildings together for thousands of years. You can't just dismiss all that history with a quick hot take. And yeah, a brick arch standing without mortar is a legit engineering trick, not something you'd see with a random block. Feels like he's just trying to sound edgy without knowing what he's talking about.

Right there with you man, some people just don't get the craft till they see it done right.
