Remember when we all used to mix mortar by hand on the ground?

I switched to a portable mixer about 5 years ago after a big foundation job in Phoenix wrecked my back. The speed is unreal, but I still think the old way gave you a better feel for the mix. Anyone else still do it the old way for small patches?

Yeah the old way gave you a better feel for the mix" - man that brings back a memory. My buddy Tony tried mixing by hand for a small patio job last summer and halfway through he dropped his trowel and just stared at the pile like it had personally offended him. He ended up using a drill attachment anyway and the whole thing looked like lumpy pancake batter.

Did Tony try to pass it off as some kind of modern art before he gave up? Sounds like his patio is now a permanent reminder of why we invented power tools.
