The 30 year guy told me to stop soaking my bricks, and my wall came out cleaner
I was on a job in Tulsa two weeks ago and this older mason named Ray, 30 years in, watched me dunk my bricks in a water bucket before laying them. He walked over and said "you're making soup, not a wall" and handed me a dry brick instead. Turns out soaked bricks slide around and squish mortar out the joints, while dry ones lock in place and let the mud set up right. My head joints came out way tighter that afternoon and I used half the mortar I normally do. Has anyone else had an old timer flip their whole method on them like that?
