Told my new guy to use a line pin for a soldier course and he looked at me like I was speaking Latin
I had a young helper on a job in Tulsa last week and told him to set a line pin for the soldier course, he just stared at me and pulled out his phone to Google it. He had been taught to eyeball the first brick and then snap a chalk line on the bed, which works okay on a straight run but throws everything off the second you hit a corner or a header course. We ended up pulling 14 bricks out of that wall face because the gauge was off by almost half an inch at the top. The old timers around here still carry a pin and line in the pouch, but it seems like nobody shows the new kids anymore. How do you all teach level and gauge to someone who has only ever seen a laser level?
