Update: my mortar joint width debate at the Denver job site got heated
So last week on a job in Denver I had a young guy on my crew insisting that 3/8 inch joints are always wrong for exterior walls and he wanted to go 1/2 inch on everything. I told him the rule of thumb is 3/8 to 1/2 inch for most brick, but he started quoting some YouTube guy who said 3/8 is too thin for freeze thaw. We ended up doing a test panel on the north wall and the 1/2 inch joints just looked sloppy with the queen bricks we had. Now he's saying we should redo a whole section that's already up. Who's right here, does joint width really matter that much for water getting in, or is 3/8 fine if the mortar is mixed right?
