My uncle spent $600 on a fancy grill last year. I still bring my $25 hibachi to every cookout.

He laughed at me until I showed up with it to his own party and had burgers ready in 8 minutes while his was still trying to heat up. The thing is just a stamped steel box with a grate, but it hits 500 degrees no problem. Anyone else still using cheap gear that keeps surprising people?

My buddy Mike spent like $200 on one of those portable gas grills and swore by it. Brought it to a camping trip and the thing couldn't even sear a hot dog properly. Meanwhile I had this old weber kettle I got for 30 bucks at a yard sale and was pulling off steaks with a perfect crust. He finally admitted my setup beat his after I cooked a whole chicken on it while his was still struggling to hit medium heat.

@scott.drew totally right, old school charcoal is hard to beat. Those fancy gas grills look good but just can't hold a candle to a kettle when it comes to real heat and flavor. How long did that chicken take, and did you use any wood chips for smoke?

I actually used to be one of those guys who thought you had to spend big to get good results. But after grabbing a beat up hibachi for $15 at a flea market and using it every weekend for a year, I totally get it now. What's the most you've ever spent on a grill that ended up being a total letdown?
