Serious question, my neighbor changed my mind about buying cheap boots

I was complaining to my neighbor Dave about my feet hurting after a shift, and he just asked how old my work boots were. I said I got them for $40 at a big box store about four months ago. He looked at the soles and pointed out they were already worn smooth, no tread left at all. He said he buys one $120 pair every two years instead of three cheap pairs, and his feet never hurt. It hit different because he wasn't bragging, he was just showing me the math. I added it up and I'm actually spending more money to be less comfortable. Now I'm staring at these boots and rethinking my whole 'buy the cheapest thing' rule. Has anyone else made a switch like this for something you use every day?

Totally get it. I used to buy the cheapest kitchen knives and they'd go dull in a month. Finally got a decent one for like sixty bucks and it's been sharp for two years. It's crazy how you don't see the cost adding up when you keep replacing the bad version.

My old roommate had a Wusthof we used for everything... that thing lasted through three apartments.

My Victorinox was only forty bucks and it's still my main knife after five years. @charles442 is right, a good one just lasts forever. You really do save money by not buying the cheap stuff over and over.
