Shoutout to my friend who pointed out my grocery cart math was all wrong
For years, I thought I was a pro at saving money on food. I'd buy the big family pack of chicken because the price per pound was lower, or get the giant tub of yogurt. The moment it clicked was at my friend's place in Tacoma. She saw my fridge and just said, 'You know half that stuff goes bad before you eat it, right?' I was spending maybe $40 more a trip on 'bulk savings' but then throwing out a third of it. Now I stick to smaller packs of what I'll actually use in a week, and my bill went down. My mileage may vary, but has anyone else had to unlearn a 'saving' habit that was actually costing you?

Oh man, that's such a good point and something I totally overlooked for way too long. I think the other trap is buying in bulk because of the "savings" then feeling pressured to cook things you don't even want just to use them up. Like, I grabbed a massive bag of frozen veggies once thinking I'd save money, but I hate frozen broccoli so I just ate sad meals for weeks or let it get freezer burn. You're actually paying more if you're forcing yourself to eat stuff you don't like just to justify the price. It's almost a mental tax on top of the food cost.

My buddy did the same thing with those "value" packs of bread... always ended up with moldy slices.
