The $9 tool I ignored for a year actually works

I kept seeing people rave about those cheap tire tread gauges at the auto parts store, figured they were junk. Last month in Phoenix I had a blowout on the 101 and the tow truck driver used one to show me my rear tires were bald at 2/32nds. Picked up the same plastic gauge for under ten bucks and checked all four tires in the driveway. How often do you guys actually measure tread depth, or do you just eyeball it?

You bought a ten dollar plastic toy and suddenly you're a tire expert, but those "rave" reviews you saw probably came from people who also think the penny trick is rocket science. I haven't measured tread depth in years and my tires have outlived half the cars in Phoenix, so either I'm lucky or all this number crunching is just paranoia dressed up as responsibility. Overthinking it just means you'll be replacing tires way earlier than you need to, and that's money better spent on gas.
