Unpopular opinion: I don't think buying in bulk saves as much as people claim

Talked to a friend at the grocery store last week who buys everything in bulk from Costco. I said I didn't bother because I live alone and stuff goes bad. He laughed and said I was leaving money on the table. But really? I did the math on paper towels and detergent. The savings were like $2 a month. Not worth the giant boxes taking up space in my apartment. Anyone else find bulk buying overrated for single people?
