A talk with my neighbor totally changed how I see canned tomatoes
She said she buys the big 28-ounce cans of crushed tomatoes for under $2 and uses them as the base for everything from soup to pasta sauce. I used to only buy the pricier jarred stuff, but her chili last night was amazing! What's your favorite cheap pantry item that you use all the time?

Remembered my buddy swearing by dried lentils... he made this killer soup with just some broth and spices. Totally changed my mind about keeping a bag in the cupboard.

Actually, lentils cook way faster if you don't soak them first.

My neighbor tried the no-soak method last week. He just tossed some red lentils straight into a pot with some onion and cumin. They fell apart into a thick stew in like, twenty minutes. He said it was the easiest dinner he'd made in months. Totally sold me on skipping the soak.
