DAE have a grocery budget crisis right before payday?

So last Thursday, I had exactly $12 left for food until my check cleared on Monday. I was staring into my fridge in my apartment in Phoenix, and it was basically just condiments and half an onion. My plan was to make a big pot of black bean soup, but I realized I was out of beans and the cheap veggie broth I usually get. I had to walk to the dollar store and get super creative. I bought a can of diced tomatoes, a bag of rice, and a single carrot. I ended up making this weird tomato rice porridge thing with the onion and some spices I had. It wasn't great, but it filled me up for three days. What do you guys make when your budget hits zero and you need to stretch what's left?

My last budget crisis was a bag of potatoes and some old butter.

Budget crisis? That's just poor planning. You should always have a backup pantry with basics. Walking to the dollar store is a waste of time and gas money.

Tell that to my empty cabinets last Tuesday. My "backup pantry" was a can of beans and some stale crackers. Not everyone has the space or cash to stock up like that. Sometimes the dollar store walk is the only plan you've got.
