Finally got my weekly grocery bill under $50
I used to just grab whatever looked good at the store, no plan, and it was always over $80. About three months ago I started making a big pot of lentil soup every Sunday with carrots, celery, and a ham hock from the butcher counter. That one pot feeds me for four lunches. Anyone have other cheap, big-batch recipes that keep well?

Making a big batch of rice and beans on Sundays was my game changer. I cook a whole bag of dried beans with some cheap sausage and spices, then mix it with a ton of rice. It freezes great in old yogurt containers. @the_susan is right about toppings, I keep a jar of salsa to mix in so it's not boring.

That lentil soup plan is so smart! My buddy Mark did something similar with a giant pot of chili. He'd buy a cheap cut of beef, a ton of beans and tomatoes, and make enough to freeze in single portions. He said it saved his budget and his sanity on busy nights, because he'd just grab a container instead of ordering takeout. He even started adding different toppings each time, like a little cheese or green onion, so it didn't feel like the same meal over and over. It really changed how he shopped for the whole week.

What gets me is the freezer space. That's the real hidden cost. You need a decent freezer to make this work, otherwise you're just shuffling containers around. It's a great plan but only if your kitchen can handle it.
