I keep seeing people toss out perfectly good chicken thighs because they think they're 'off'

I used to be guilty of this too. My grandma raised chickens in the 70s and she'd keep thighs in the fridge for damn near a week past the sell-by date. If it smells fine and the surface isn't slimy, it's probably fine. Last Tuesday I bought a pack at Aldi in Tulsa and cooked them on day 5. Still good. Now I do the smell test instead of guessing. How do you tell if yours are still okay?

Sell-by dates aren't really about safety anyway.

sell-by dates aren't really about safety" - that's true for most stuff actually. The dates are more about when the store should pull it, not when you're gonna die from eating it. I've eaten yogurt a week past the date and been fine. But yeah, milk's a different story - if it smells like a gym sock, toss it.

Well actually I've had food poisoning twice from stuff past the date so I really don't agree with that.
