I thought dried beans were a waste of time until my gas bill went up $30

After my utility bill jumped in January I finally tried cooking a bag of pintos instead of canned and it cost me like $1.50 for a week's worth of chili. Anyone else have a budget shortcut they avoided forever that actually saved real money?

Three bags of lentils paid for themselves in one month for me.

Yeah I was the same with rice. Always bought the little boxes of the flavored stuff for like $2 each. Finally grabbed a 10 pound bag of jasmine rice at the Asian market for $8 and it lasted me almost 4 months. I just throw some garlic and onion powder in the pot while it cooks and it tastes way better than the boxed stuff honestly. Makes enough for lunch all week and I'm not spending $60 a month on rice packets anymore.

Man, you know what, I actually used to hate buying rice in bulk. Thought I'd never get through it, figured it'd go bad or something. But hearing how long that 10 pound bag lasted you kind of flips that whole idea on its head. Especially when you break down the cost per meal like that, it's hard to argue with. Might have to give that jasmine rice a try instead of the usual white long grain I've been grabbing.
