I thought making my own veggie broth was a quick win, but simmering it down to a decent concentrate took a full 3 hours, not the 30 minutes the blog post said.
What's a truly fast way to get good flavor for soups without spending half a day on it?

Yeah, those "quick" blog times are never right. My buddy just uses a pressure cooker now, gets a solid broth in like 45 minutes.

Is it even worth the hassle? Just buy the boxed stuff, tastes fine. Taylor_miller10 has a point with the pressure cooker though.

Ever try just roasting your veggie scraps first? I was totally with @charles442 on the boxed stuff being fine... until my oven died and I tried the pressure cooker method. Game changer. It gets way more flavor out of everything in under an hour, no more watching a pot for half the day. The boxed stuff is okay, but this actually tastes like something.
