Question about buying produce - big box store vs local farmers market

I spent $18 on a week's worth of veggies at the big grocery chain last Monday, but my neighbor swears the farmers market is actually cheaper if you go right at closing, so has anyone actually tracked the difference and come out ahead?

I see where your neighbor is coming from with the "closing time" thing, but I've actually tracked it for a few months and the big box store still wins for me. Last week I got a huge bag of onions, a head of cabbage, carrots, and some bell peppers for $11 at the chain, and the same stuff at the farmers market even at closing was like $15. The market stuff is definitely prettier and lasts a couple days longer, but unless you're really good at haggling or showing up right when they're packing up, I just don't see how it saves money.

Does the market stuff actually weigh out heavier for the price though?

That "huge bag of onions for $11" actually makes me rethink the whole market thing.
