That time I bought a bulk box of 'cheap' chicken and learned my lesson

I saw this big discount box of chicken at a wholesale place for like 30 bucks. Figured I'd save a TON of money meal prepping for the month. Got it home and opened it up and the smell hit me right away. It was already going bad, like two days from expiration at best. I ended up throwing out at least half of it because it was slimy and gross. So instead of saving money I basically threw 30 bucks straight in the trash. Plus I had to rush to the regular store and pay full price for dinner that night. Anyone else get burned by those 'bulk deals' that just aren't worth the risk?

Oh man I used to be the queen of thinking I was outsmarting the system with those bulk deals. I'd be like "oh yeah the grocery store is just trying to mark this down because it's fine, they're just being cautious" but nope. That one time I got a giant party pack of chicken wings on clearance and half of them were already turning grey when I opened the bag inside my car. I had to pull over and toss them in a gas station trash can because the smell was making me nauseous on the drive home. Now I stick to buying meat day-of or one day ahead tops and just pay the extra couple bucks for peace of mind. The 30 dollar gamble taught me that "cheap" chicken is usually cheap for a reason.

Learned this one the hard way with a "manager's special" pack of ground beef. Smelled like a gym sock wrapped in regret.
