The 89 cent can of sardines that ruined my Wednesday lunch and what I did with the rest of the tin
I keep a couple tins of sardines in my desk drawer at work for the days when I forget to pack lunch, because they cost 89 cents at the store on Elm and they do the job. Last Wednesday I opened one at my desk around 12:30, dumped it straight onto a piece of dry toast, and took a bite. It was so salty and fishy I actually gagged a little and had to walk to the break room to spit it out. The whole floor smelled like a bait shop for the rest of the afternoon and a guy named Reggie asked me twice if something died in the vents. I still had 3 tins left and I was not about to toss 2 dollars and 67 cents in the trash. So the next day I mixed one tin with a spoon of mayo, a squirt of yellow mustard, some chopped onion from the salad bar, and a pinch of pepper, then piled it on a warm tortilla I heated in the microwave for 20 seconds. Completely different food. I ate it standing at my desk and went back for a second one. Has anyone got a cheap way to fix up canned fish that does not just taste like salty regret?
Reggie asking about the vents twice is my whole life in one sentence. I once tried to "fix" sardines with hot sauce and just made spicy regret, so your mayo mustard tortilla trick is way smarter.
