Tried making black bean burgers from scratch and they fell apart in the pan

So I figured I'd save some cash by making my own veggie burgers instead of buying the $5 box at the store. Followed a recipe from a blog, used a can of black beans, some breadcrumbs, an egg, spices. Mixed it all up, formed patties, put them in a hot skillet. Within 2 minutes they were just crumbling into a mess of beans and crumbs. Ended up eating it like a weird scramble with a fork. Has anyone actually gotten homemade bean burgers to hold together without falling apart?

Oh so you thought making black bean burgers would be easy? Thats cute. I tried this exact same thing last summer and ended up with a pan full of bean soup that looked like something my dog threw up. The secret is you gotta mash those beans way more than you think, like almost to a paste, and then freeze the patties for at least 30 minutes before they hit the pan. Also ditch the breadcrumbs and use oats instead, they hold better somehow. But honestly I still just buy the $5 box now because im not a professional bean burger scientist.

Dog threw up? You're joking right? I mean I know bean burgers can go wrong but that visual is just burned into my brain now. How long did it take you to clean that mess up? I would have just thrown the whole pan away and started fresh.
