Unpopular opinion: Skimping on broth ruined my lentil soup.

I used water instead of stock to save money, and the whole pot tasted bland and boring.

My friend tried to cheap out on her lentil soup with just water once. It was so flavorless we called it "lentil tea," lmao. She learned her lesson and now keeps bouillon cubes on hand.

Lentil tea is the perfect name for that, @patriciah51! I made the same mistake once with a potato soup, just water and potatoes. It tasted like hot potato water (so bad, right?). Now I always start with broth or at least sauté some onions first. That depth of flavor makes all the difference. My soups went from sad to stellar once I figured that out.

Calling it "lentil tea" is a bit dramatic, isn't it? Sometimes a simple soup is just fine, especially if you're on a tight budget. Not every meal needs to be a flavor explosion. It might be bland, but calling it a sad mistake feels like overkill for just some boiled lentils.
