When the $1.50 rice bag beat my $8 boxed meal kit

Last Tuesday I tried that bargain bin jasmine rice from the local market, the one with the faded label, and cooked it up with a can of black beans and some frozen bell peppers I had sitting around. I usually grab those boxed meal kits on sale for around $8, but this came to maybe $2.20 total and tasted way better, plus it made enough for lunch the next day. Has anyone else found that the cheapest basic ingredients end up beating the fancy shortcuts more often than not?
