Airbnb skeptics convinced me to try hostels again

My sister kept saying hostels aren't what they used to be, so I booked a private room at one in Lisbon for $40 a night. The kitchen was cleaner than my last Airbnb and I met three people who showed me free walking tours I never would have found. Has anyone else found decent hostels that beat Airbnbs on price?

Used to think hostels were just for people on a shoestring budget with no standards. Gave one a try in Barcelona last month, private room with a solid community vibe for half what an Airbnb would cost. Totally changed my view on what a good hostel can be.

Private room for $40 in Lisbon? That's less than I spend on my anxiety meds in a month. I booked a hostel in Budapest last year and walked into the wrong dorm room at 2am, woke up some poor Swedish guy, then tripped over my own bag trying to apologize. Still ended up cheaper than an Airbnb and the free walking tour guide laughed at my story the whole way.
