Digging through my old travel journal brought back some memories...

I found notes on how we used to find free places to sleep in big cities... like asking at university bulletin boards or train station info desks. It was all about talking to people, not checking a screen. Sure, it took more time and sometimes failed, but it felt like a real adventure. These days, everything's booked online, but back then, you just figured it out as you went.

Train station info desks would usually just point you to a paid hostel though. The university bulletin boards were the real move for that. Do you think that kind of asking-around travel is completely gone now?

Notice how many daily tasks got cleaner but less human. Apps solved the friction of asking around by removing the need to talk to anyone. We traded those messy bulletin board connections for sterile, efficient searches.

Oh, your post just jogged my memory from a trip to Lisbon. I got lost and asked a local bakery owner for directions, and she ended up inviting me to her family's dinner. Stuff like that still happens, but you have to be open to chatting with strangers instead of just staring at your phone.
