Got roasted by a hostel owner for my packing method, now I swear by a different system

She told me my 'roll everything' approach was wasting space and making my bag heavier, so I switched to compression cubes last year - which side do you fall on for long backpacking trips?

Last year on a three month trip through SE Asia I saw a guy in a hostel in Luang Prabang with a full sized rolling suitcase. He was struggling to get it up the stairs to the third floor. I asked him about it and he said he just preferred having everything laid flat. I stuck with my compression cubes and a 40L pack, never looked back. Different strokes I guess but that suitcase guy looked miserable every time we hit a new city with cobblestone streets.

Honestly watching someone try to drag a full size roller through old town Luang Prabang made me glad I switched to a 35L pack years ago. Your compression cubes and 40L setup is the move for that kind of travel, @reese_nelson saw it firsthand.
