Had to eat crow about hostels - thought they were just for party kids

Always avoided hostels because I figured they'd be loud, dirty, and full of drunk 20 year olds. Then I stayed at one in Portland Maine last fall because it was $45 a night vs $130 for any motel. Quiet hours were enforced, kitchen was clean, and I met a retired couple who'd been traveling for 6 months on $40 a day. Now I check hostelworld before booking anything else. Any other budget travelers have a stereotype about hostels that turned out wrong?

Portland Maine's a good spot for a first hostel stay, that's where I got over my own doubts too. @reese124 you're right that the real value is meeting people who get it, not just the cash savings. And yeah snoring happens, but earplugs are cheap and you can't beat $45 a night.

Eating crow" about hostels... more like eating budget-friendly ramen with strangers who get it.

@reese124 saving five bucks is great until someone's snoring shakes the bunk bed...
