Hot take: that $20 hostel in Bangkok was actually cleaner than the $100 hotel I booked 10 years ago

I had bedbugs in that fancy place but the cheap one just had a fan that sounded like a dying engine, so what did I learn, has anyone else noticed older budget spots outlasting the newer budget options?

Went to a place in Chiang Mai back in 2015 that charged $8 a night and had the best mattress I've ever slept on. The fancy hotel I stayed at in Tokyo last year charged $200 a night and the pillows were basically sandbags. Sometimes the cheap spots just hit different because they don't overthink anything.

See it differently, @shane_fisher37. That $8 mattress was probably just luck, not a sign of cheap spots being better. A smart hotel spends money on the right things like good beds and pillows, while a budget place just throws in whatever they have. I've had too many bad nights in cheap spots to trust that approach anymore.
