I finally ditched hotel breakfast and started hitting local bakeries instead

Used to always pay extra for the hotel breakfast buffet because I thought it was saving money. Stayed at a place in Nashville last month, the buffet was $18 per person. Went two blocks down the street to this little bakery and got a massive breakfast sandwich and coffee for $7. I've been doing this for every trip since and it's way better food and way cheaper. Anyone else find better deals skipping the hotel breakfast?

Did you find that bakery just by wandering around or did you look up spots beforehand?

i actually took a weird approach - i checked google maps for bakeries near the subway station and then deliberately went to the one with the WORST reviews. sounds crazy but sometimes bad reviews are just people complaining about slow service at a place that makes everything from scratch. turned out to be this hole in the wall with the flakiest croissants i've ever had. the owner was this older lady who clearly doesn't care about online presence, just makes insanely good bread.

Haha that is BRILLIANT actually! I love the idea of weaponizing bad reviews like that. Most people read those and run the other way but you basically used them as a treasure map. Yeah bad reviews are almost always about some Karen being mad the coffee took 4 minutes or the wifi password wasn't on a sign. Meanwhile the actual FOOD is probably incredible because the owner is too busy baking to care about Yelp. You outsmarted the whole system and got a perfect croissant out of it. That's some galaxy brain stuff right there.
