I finally stopped pushing the 'cheapest flight' button every time

I was talking to my friend's dad, a retired pilot, at a barbecue. He said, 'You know, paying $50 more for a direct flight on a Tuesday can save you a $100 hotel night if you land after the last bus leaves.' That stuck with me. I always hunted the lowest fare, but last month to Austin, I took his advice. I got in at 3 PM instead of 11 PM, used public transit, and skipped a cab. Has anyone else found that a slightly higher ticket price saved money overall?

That's a huge difference in arrival time. It really shows how the cheapest ticket can have hidden costs. Smart move to look at the whole trip.

Yeah, it's like that with a lot of things now. The cheapest option up front often costs you more time or hassle later. Makes you check the fine print on everything.
