I found the world's cheapest hotel bed in Bangkok, and it was a hammock

This was about five years ago, I was trying to stretch a two-week trip. A place listed for $8 a night had a photo of a normal room. I got there and the guy just pointed to a hammock strung between two posts on a shared rooftop. Slept there for three nights because my budget was shot. It was actually fine, but now I always message to confirm 'bed' means an actual bed. Anyone else had a booking surprise that became a weirdly okay hack?

My hostel "bed" was a yoga mat on a concrete floor, but it saved my trip.

A yoga mat on concrete sounds rough, but hey, it got the job done.

Remember my friend Jake crashing on a yoga mat in a garage after a festival... said his back felt like a knot for a week. It totally makes your point, @averymartin, about it getting the job done even when it's rough. He swears he'll never do it again, but he also says it's a story he tells all the time now. Funny how the worst sleeps sometimes make for the best memories later on.
