Met a guy in a Prague hostel who lived on 5 euros a day for a month
He was an older German dude, maybe 60, and he showed me his notebook with every cent he spent. He'd buy a baguette and some cheese from Lidl each morning, then eat dinner at a hole-in-the-wall spot that did soup for 1 euro. Made me feel like a sucker for spending 20 euros on a sit-down meal.

The potato guy sounds kinda sad but also impressive in a weird way. @the_elliot, I get what you mean about just plain potatoes being rough, but at least he made it work. Maybe he was just showing how cheap you can go if you really have to.

Reminds me of the old guy I met in Berlin who ate nothing but potatoes for a whole week.

Did he just boil them plain or was he out here making potato pancakes and oven fries too? Just straight potatoes with no butter or salt for a week sounds like a nightmare but I guess you survive. What was his reason for doing that in the first place?
