My brother-in-law just told me he books flights on Tuesdays at 3 PM local time for the airline's hub city, and it finally clicked why my 'random' searches were so expensive.
He said airlines often adjust fares mid-week based on demand from their main office, so checking right after that, like from Atlanta for Delta, can catch the lower prices before everyone else does, and has anyone else found a specific time or trick that actually works?

The whole world runs on these hidden schedules, like grocery stores stocking bread at 4 a.m.

Ever wonder who's actually awake at that hour? I mean, I'm usually up because my cat decides 3 a.m. is playtime, not because I'm getting anything useful done. Maybe the whole night shift is just running on weird pet schedules too.

Nora's right about the hidden schedules. My own life runs on the "when does the dog need out" clock and the "forgot to take the trash down" panic. I tried the Tuesday trick once, but I was so busy watching the clock I missed the actual price drop. Ended up paying more because I was too busy being clever about the timing.
