My brother's 'luxury' hotel story from Bangkok changed my mind about hostels
He paid $120 a night for a place that had bed bugs and a broken AC, while my $8 bunk in a clean hostel had free breakfast and a rooftop bar. I always thought cheap meant bad, but his trip sounded like a nightmare. Has anyone else had a 'fancy' hotel totally ruin a trip?

Yeah, that's rough. Did he at least try to get a refund or switch rooms? I've seen places hide behind their "luxury" label when you complain, acting like the high price itself is the service. Makes you wonder what they're actually charging for if the basics are broken.

Exactly, it's like they sell you a dream and deliver a garage. The price should cover things working, not just looking nice in photos. Feels like a scam every time.

Right? The "luxury" tag is just a license to overcharge for a sad mint on the pillow. My friend had a "boutique" place where the fancy rain shower head just dripped rusty water, and the mini bar was stocked with empty bags of peanuts. They called the view "cityscape" but it was just a brick wall. You're basically paying for the font they use on the brochure.
