My flight got cancelled in Bangkok and I ended up saving $200

I was stuck for a day, so I took a local bus to a town 2 hours away instead of staying in the city. A hostel there was only $8 a night and the food was way cheaper. Has anyone else saved money by getting 'stranded' somewhere?

Getting stranded" sounds like a pretty extreme way to save cash. How bad does your situation have to be for that to be the smart move? It just seems like a story that got exaggerated over time.

But what did you actually do with that extra day? Like, was the town itself interesting, or did you just sit in the hostel room? I feel like the real save only happens if you find something cool to do for free (or super cheap) while you're there. Otherwise, you're just bored in a cheaper place.
