Picked a hostel with no A/C over a hotel in New Orleans in July - here's how it went
I was booking a 3 night trip to New Orleans last month and had $150 total for lodging. Found this hostel in the Marigny for $40 a night vs a Comfort Inn near the Superdome for $110. Figured I'd save the cash for food and music. Big mistake. First night it was 95 degrees and the room fan just moved hot air around. I ended up sleeping on a bench outside by the Mississippi river at 2am. Second night I caved and paid $60 for a last minute hotel room. So I spent $140 total anyway. Has anyone else tried to rough it without AC in the south and regretted it?

Man, you learned that lesson the hard way! July in NOLA without AC is just a bad idea all around.

Honestly, is it really that bad? People act like a hot room without AC is some life or death situation. You just sit still, drink water, and wait for the sun to go down, it's not that deep.

Girl you thought a box fan was gonna fight 95% humidity in New Orleans?? That's like bringing a WATER PISTOL to a hurricane. The Mississippi river bench is actually a classic move though, lots of people do that when they realize their room is basically a sauna with bedbugs. You basically paid hostel prices to sleep outside and then hotel prices to sleep inside, so really you got the FULL New Orleans experience AND paid the same amount. Next time just spend the $40 on a fan and sleep in your car with the AC running, at least you won't get eaten alive by mosquitoes.
