PSA: I tried that sleep-on-the-rental-car trick near LAX to save on a hotel
Woke up at 3am to a security guard tapping on the window and got a $45 parking ticket instead of the $80 hotel room I was dodging, so which is worse, paying for a cheap motel or risking more fines?

Oh man, I learned this one the hard way too. Park at one of the Park 'N Fly lots near the airport instead, they usually have shuttles and you can crash in your car without getting hassled. Some even have a little waiting area inside with chairs you can nap in if you play it cool. Way cheaper than a motel and the security there doesn't care as long as you're not being obvious about it.

Wait, do those Park 'N Fly lots let you just sleep there overnight without actually being a customer who parked there earlier?
