Thought hostel dorms would be a nightmare but actually loved it

I was super skeptical about staying in a 10-bed dorm in Bangkok for $8 a night. Thought it'd be loud, dirty, and awkward with strangers. Turns out the place had lockers, a/c, and everyone was chill about quiet hours. I met a solo traveler who showed me a street food spot I'd never find on my own. Anyone else try hostel life after thinking it wasn't for you?

Forget the $8 bed, the real hack is asking the front desk for their secret food list.

Ask the front desk staff for local food tips and see how that goes. Half the time theyll point you to the same tourist traps everyone knows about, or worse, a place thats closed for renovations. That secret list is usually just a few handwritten notes on a napkin from shift workers who havent eaten there in months. Plus, theyre trained to push hotel restaurants or partner spots with kickbacks, not actual hidden gems. An $8 bed might be a gamble, but at least you control the risks. Id rather trust a random Yelp review from a stranger than a front desk employees vague recommendation over a bell desk.
