Vent: I think the 'pack only a carry-on' rule is overrated for long trips

Last month in Lisbon, I saved $75 on a checked bag fee by cramming everything into a backpack, but I spent over $100 buying toiletries and a proper jacket I didn't pack. The stress of washing clothes in a tiny sink every other night ruined the relaxed vibe I wanted. Has anyone else found that paying for a checked bag on a 10+ day trip is actually worth it for your sanity?

Totally agree, that math never works out. Forgetting one decent jacket or pair of shoes on a longer trip can wipe out any bag fee savings instantly. The real cost is the vacation time wasted hunting for a pharmacy or a store instead of just enjoying the place.

But what if you just pack the jacket and shoes?

Honestly this is the same mindset that makes people skip buying a plunger until they really need one. Tbh trying to save a tiny bit on a bag fee can totally wreck your whole trip vibe when you're freezing or your feet are killing you. Ngl it feels like we're all trying to be so clever we end up making things harder for ourselves. You see it everywhere, not just with packing.

Actually, the math CAN work out if you pack smarter, not just lighter. It's about planning for the climate and your actual itinerary.
