A guy at my church's finance class said my grocery budget was 'fantasy math' and honestly he had a point
I sat through a free budgeting class at my church in Tulsa back in March and when we went around sharing numbers I said we feed our family of 4 on $450 a month. This retired accountant named Dale just shook his head and asked if that included household stuff like paper towels and dish soap. It didn't. I went home and added up the last 3 months of receipts and the real number was closer to $610 because I was leaving out all the little Target runs for cleaning stuff and snacks. So I split my budget into groceries and household and gave each one its own envelope, and the funny part is I'm actually spending less now, around $540 total, just because I can see where it goes. Has anyone else had their budget fall apart when they finally counted the boring stuff like detergent and trash bags?
