Can we talk about the difference between a cash envelope and a debit card for groceries?

I did a test for two months, using cash for one and my card for the other. I spent $75 less on average with the cash envelope, because seeing the money leave my hand made me think twice about snacks. The card just felt like a number going down. Has anyone else switched to cash for a specific category and been surprised?

That part about the "physical handoff" is so true. I see it with my own kids and their allowance. They get cash and they'll stare at a toy's price tag forever, but if I just buy it for them on my card, they don't even blink. It's like the money isn't real to them unless it's in their hand.

Oh, that's interesting. I read a study once that said people spend up to 20% more when they use plastic instead of cash. It's that physical handoff, makes the cost feel real. I tried cash for eating out and it definitely cut my "just grab a coffee" stops.

My friend switched to cash for her kids' school clothes shopping last year. She said pulling out those twenties for each kid's budget was a total game changer. When the envelope got thin, she stopped browsing the extra accessories and stuck to the list. She told me swiping her card in past years always led to going over by at least fifty bucks. The physical limit of cash made her way more careful with those extra wants.
