Hot take: I don't think percentage budgets work for everyone

Had a chat with my cousin last week in Columbus and she swear by the 50/30/20 rule... I tried it for six months back in 2023 and it just made me feel worse. She said if you're not hitting those numbers you're doing it wrong, but my income swings so much week to week that there's no point locking in percentages. Some weeks I clear $900, other weeks it's more like $450 depending on the route. What works for me is just picking a flat amount to save first, like $150 every paycheck, and then whatever's left is what I live on. It's not pretty but it's honest, and I actually stuck with it. Anyone else tried a fixed amount instead of a percentage and felt like it fit their messy income better?
