Just saw something wild at the grocery store checkout

I was at the Food Mart on Oak Street yesterday and the person in front of me had a cart full of stuff. The cashier scanned everything, and the total came to over $300. The customer looked shocked and started putting things back, one by one. It took ten minutes. I watched them put back a $12 bag of fancy coffee, a big box of cookies, and a bunch of other non-essentials. It was a real-time lesson in how small things add up. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you saw your own spending habits in someone else?

Man, that hits home. I was that person once, with a cart full of "good deals" that weren't so good all together. Now I do the math in my head as I shop, rounding up each item. That fancy cheese? Call it ten bucks, not $8.99. It adds up fast in your mind before it ever hits the belt, so there's no scary surprise at the end.

Ever watch the cashier's face during that?

Ugh, yes. @carter.gavin, it's the worst. You see their soul leave their body for a second. They just stare at the card reader like it betrayed them. That little pause is so awkward. Makes me want to just vanish.
