My grocery budget blew up by $80 last month and I fixed it with one weird trick

So I was in the checkout line at Walmart in Akron on a Tuesday and the total hit $320 instead of my usual $240. I stood there shocked while the cashier scanned my last item. Turns out I was grabbing pre-cut veggies and bagged salads every week without even thinking about it. I went home and tried buying whole veggies and a head of lettuce instead. Saved me almost exactly $80 the next trip. Anyone else ever get caught off guard by convenience fees like that?

The shredded cheese thing hit me hard, I was paying almost $5 for a bag that was half air and now I get a block for like $3.50 and it keeps way longer. It made me realize how many things in life we pay extra for just to skip a tiny bit of effort, like pre-washed lettuce or pre-made rice packs. There's this whole layer of convenience pricing that sneaks up on you because it feels like you're just buying groceries, but really you're paying for someone else's labor and packaging. Once you start noticing it in one aisle you see it everywhere, from pre-sliced apples to those single serve guacamole cups.

Start by grabbing a whole chicken instead of the pre-cut parts. You get about 30% more meat for the same price plus you can boil the bones for broth. Same goes for cheese blocks instead of shredded cheese, lasts longer and melts better anyway. The biggest one for me was buying whole carrots and celery for mirepoix instead of the pre-chopped soup packs, saved me like $15 a week easy.

Time is money too, @sethhernandez, and pre-chopped saves me plenty.
