My "reliable" fridge died on a Friday night and spoiled $200 of groceries

My 8-year-old Kenmore refrigerator compressor went out last Friday right before a holiday weekend, trashing all the meal prepped food I had stocked up. The repair guy said a new compressor would cost nearly as much as a basic replacement unit. Anyone had luck with extended warranties on appliances, or should I just plan for this every 7-8 years?

That "costs as much as a replacement unit" line is the appliance equivalent of a doctor saying "we'll have to amputate." I’ve sworn off extended warranties after three separate claims got denied for "normal wear and tear" on a five-year-old washing machine.

Same thing happened to me with a fridge, totally useless.
