Back when I used paper maps on 31 in Tennessee, wrong turns were an hourly thing

Now I just let the phone tell me where to go and I miss the whole part where I'd pull over at a gas station in Crossville and ask a stranger for directions, has anyone else stopped bothering to learn a route before they drive it?

Honestly, I get that so much. Sometimes I swear the phone has made me lazy about actually knowing where I’m going until I’m already lost.

...and honestly that's exactly when I started making myself look at the map before I even get in the car. Like just a quick glance at the general direction, pick out a couple landmarks. It's not about ditching the phone completely, more like having a backup plan in your head. Because the one time your service drops or your battery dies, you're not completely screwed. Now I always try to check the route once on the map and then see if I can recall the main turns without looking again.
