Had to choose between merging early or riding out a closed lane on I-5

Honestly I picked riding it out the other day and watched six people cut over at the last second, almost causing a pileup. Has anyone else had better luck just merging early even if you look like a chump?

Absolutely, that "secret loser handshake" totally sums up how I felt when I kept getting wrecked for merging too fast.
