Just had a driver wave me through a four-way stop for the first time

Oh man, this happened to me last week and I almost had a heart attack. I was sitting at this four-way stop and this guy just stops way back from the line and starts waving like crazy. I sat there for a solid ten seconds trying to figure out if he was pointing at something behind me or what. Eventually I just went and he honked like I was the idiot. I still don't know if I was supposed to go or if he was just being nice and messing up the whole flow of traffic.
