TIL merging earlier actually saves time on the 94 expressway

TIL merging earlier actually saves time on the 94 expressway. I used to race to the front of the merge lane every morning thinking I was beating traffic, but a trucker honked and yelled 'pick a hole early' last week. Tried slotting in a quarter mile back instead of forcing my way in at the last second, and my commute dropped from 45 minutes to 35. Anyone else find that backing off the gas speeds things up?

Huh, it's like driving backwards to go forwards sometimes.

Isn't that just how most learning curves actually feel though?

Honestly, my buddy Mark tried that whole last-second merge thing for years on 94. One time he was so focused on zooming ahead that he almost sideswiped this old minivan that had no idea he was coming. After that, he started slotting in way earlier, like a half mile back, and his drive got way less stressful. Ngl, he said it felt weird at first because he thought he was "losing" but he ends up home way earlier now. Tbh, I think that trucker did you a solid, that's the kind of advice you just don't get from a driving manual.
